Diverse conditions Flashcards
Rectal prolapse
Factors: tail length, int parasites, prolapsed vagina, hormone implants
Prolapse not painful, secondary inf causes swelling and pain, arched back stance
Surgical-remove portion of intestines
Other- elastic band amputation, select against susceptible lines, leave tails longer, improved parasite control
Rumen acidosis
High conc diets, overheat, pant
Listless, stops eating, breathes fast
PM: dehydrated carcass, abd ulcers, low rumen ph
Remove conc from diet, water, carron oil for diarrhea, activated charcoal, gradual intro to conc
Rumen alkalosis
Incorrectly formulated urea lick, rain dissolves urea, sheep crave salt licks
Severe bloating, trembles, acts wildly,
PM: rumen bloat, foamy windpipe, high rumen ph
1L vinegar in 2L water through stomach tube, protect licks from the rain
Bloat
Free gas bloat or frothy bloat, excessively fertilized pasture, wilts, overeat
Distended body, rapid breathing
PM: sticky stable foam, bloat line
Household oil to break up foam
Severe- pierce rumen with knife
Predators
Kill young, dogs, baboons, Eagles, jackals
Dog- bites animal all over, wound more than kill
Jackals- bite throat and eat starting at abd
Karakul- start at hindquarters
Large dogs as part of flock, hard neck collars, ostriches, fencing
Stress abortions
Angora
Expulsion of apparently normal, well developed fetus after 90d gestation
Remove stressors, feed well, cull habitual aborters
Habitual aborters
Select and inbreed for increased hair quality. Fetal mem malfunctions, amniotic fluid accumulates
Oedema in all tissues and under skin, heart failure, mummified fetus
Good Q feed, reduce stress, cull habitual aborters
Enzootic abortion
Stress
Decreased lamb %, abortion storms, decreased lamb growth
PM: chorion lesions, enlarged jejunal lymph nodes
Lamb deaths
Poor mothering, lambs starved, difficult births, fed too much or too little
Starved, flat empty belly, lies down
Sick lambs kept aside, 20% G solution, keep warm, assist partus
Redgut
White clover/Lucerne (lush pasture)
Enlarged intestines cut off blood supply, poisons absorbed, unpredictable death, bleating, stretching, swells after death
Usually found dead, don’t over fertilize pastures
