MET lower extremity Flashcards
Gastrocnemius
Bring leg up into flexion keeping knee locked, Pt pushes toes into plantar flexion.
Add dorsi flexion to stretch.
Soleus
Put knee under Pts knee to ensure flexion, Pt plantar flexes against your resistance.
Add dorsi flexion to stretch.
Hamstrings (non-specific)
Feel for bind, place ankle over your shoulder, Pt pushes with straight leg into shoulder.
Take leg further into flexion by elevating own body.
Hamstrings insertion
Same but with bent leg so knee over shoulder.
TFL & IT band
Flex the Pts leg over side you’re testing, place one hand on their ankle and one hand on the side of the knee closest to you. Add adduction to leg on couch untill a bind is felt. Add further adduction and stabilise at the knee to stretch,.
Adductors
Pt supine, knees bent and heels together, push down at the knees to introduce adduction through the hips.
Iliopsoas
Pt lies at the bottom of the couch holding on to the knee of the side that isn’t being tested, pulling it as far as they can into their chest.
Full hip flexion encourages posterior rot of innominate and flattens lordosis.
Pt puts foot into side
Rec fem
Pt prone, flex knee until bind is felt. At the same time stabilise the sacrum to prevent the pelvis from anteriorly rotating and stressing lower lumbar spine facet joints. (A pillow can be placed underneath if Pt has increased Lumbar lordosis).
Can be done from supine with Pt hanging off edge of couch.
Piriformis
Pt prone, testing side knee bent. Stabilise the sacrum with right hand while internally rotating hip by pushing ankle away from you, until bind is felt. Pt pulls the leg back in against resistance
Supine - Cross testing leg over the other and stabilise the innominate with the other hand. Add adduction until bind is felt, Pt abducts while therapist resists the movement.
QL
Pt adopts banana like position with right leg over left. Adduct legs to stretch.
Erector spinae
Pt prone, pillow under abdomen. Left hand on Pts lower thoracic spine and right on Pts sacrum. Pt asked to lift shoulder off couch to contract lumber erector spinae.
Move hands down and out more to encourage stretch
