Effects of Mobilisation Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 main effects
A
Mechanical, Neurophysiological and nutritional
2
Q
Mechanical
A
- Aim to restore joint mobility to normal ROM
- Following injury and immobilisation, soft tissues can become shortened and limit overall joint mobility
- Increases the flexibility and mobility of ligaments and tendons
3
Q
Neurophysiological
A
- Especially when mobilising the spine region as spinal tissues are so highly innervated and provide large degree of afferent input into the CVS
- Stimulates mechanoreceptors to decrease pain and reduce muscle spasm and guarding due to nociceptive stimulation
4
Q
Nutritional
A
Distraction or small gliding movements – cause synovial fluid movement– Movement can improve nutrient exchange from joint swelling & immobilisation
