When is a MET call (code blue) initiated?

A

A MET call is initiated when acute changes in one or more of the following occur:
-Airway = threatened airway, stridor/upper airway obstruction
-Breathing= RR 35
O2 sat 130
=BP 200mmHg
-Neurology= Sudden fall in LOC
-Other= any patient you are worried about, that have a sudden deterioration in medical condition
-also all cardiac arrests/respiratory arrests/uncontrolled bleeding

What is the immediate care of a pt that is conscious in a MET call situation?

A

If pt is conscious:

  • DR ABCDE
  • press MET CALL button
  • oxygen for all (10L/min hudson mask initially)
  • sit pt upright
  • set of vitals (repeat every 5 min)
  • elevate foot of bed if BP is low
  • accurate assessment/pt history
  • reassure pt
  • administer pharmacological treatments
  • -call emergency hospital number

What is the immediate care of a pt if they lose consciousness in a MET call situation?

A

If a pt loses consciousness then:

  • DR ABCDE
  • cease medication
  • Press MET call button
  • lay pt supine position
  • secure airway-head tilt and jaw thrust/ insert oro-pharyngeal airway/ oxygen
  • prepare and assist with intubation
  • CPR
  • call emergency hospital number
