What is a weather report?
A statement of weather conditions that exist at a given time and place.
What is the met offices responsible for supplying?
Actual weather reports (twice hourly) Special weather reports Crash actuals Weather forecasts Weather warnings
What information is on a met form?
Date and time
Serial number
Surface wind
Definitions of gust?
A sudden increase in speed of 10 knots or more above the average wind speed lasting a few seconds
Definition of Squall?
Any increase in speeding lasting several minutes often with a change of direction and heavy precipitation
Definition of Gale?
An average speed of 34 knots or more and or gusts of 43 knots or more.
What does veering mean?
Change in direction clockwise
What does backing mean?
Change in direction anti-clockwise
What does max mean in relation to wind?
The highest gust in the 10 minutes prior to observation
What is visibility?
The greatest horizontal distance at which an object can be seen and recognised in daylight, or at night could be seen and recognised if the general illumination were raised to daylight level.
What is a cloud?
Composed of water droplets, or ice crystals.
Which 2 cloud types need to be on the metform?
Towering Cumulus (TCU) Cumulonimbus (CB)
What can thunderstorms do?
Weather; sudden lowering of cloud base, reduced visibility, precipitation
Hail; Causes damage to airframes, builds up on a runway
Icing; Ice forms on airframes reducing aircraft performance and capability
Lightning; Causes temporary blinding of aircrew, damage to runways, affects communications and aircraft instruments.
Squalls; Sudden changes in surface wind speed and direction
Turbulence; Sudden up-draughts and down-draughts up to 25km away.
Reporting clouds, what is 1-2 oktas, 3-4 oktas, 5-7 oktas and 8 oktas?
Few (FEW)
Scattered (SCT)
Broken (BKN)
Overcast (OVC)
What does SKC mean?
Sky clear, no clouds
