Airfield Composition Flashcards
What is the manoeuvring area?
Part of the aerodrome used for takeoff/landing and with the movement of air systems associated with takeoff and landing.
3 things the runway is made up off?
Threshold lines
Centre line
Runway number
What are runways numbered of?
The bearing of the compass which is orientated. 360 is 36
What does a displaced threshold contain?
Transverse bar
Four chevrons
Two directional arrows
What does a taxiway consist of?
A broken yellow centreline
Two yellow side lines in each side
What is a holding position made of?

Located 70 Metres from the edge of the runway
what does and ASP perform?
Loading and unloading of passengers and cargo
Refuelling
Parking maintenance
How many and where would a windsock be located.
Normally 2, places where it is least affected by local turbulence.
What can stop a aircraft?
Air System Arresting Barrier
Rotary Hydraulic Arrestor Gear (RHAG)
3 RHAG operating states.
Up
Down
De-rigged
What does RHAG do?
A mechanical system used to rapidly decelerate an air system as it lands.
What is a load classification group?
Used to express the effect of an individual air system weight on different pavement surfaces.
Used to determine if an Air system can operate on a given surface.

Omnidirectional, low intensity white light (every 90m)
PAPI meaning?
Precision approach path indicators
CL5 Bar.
Centre line and 5 crossbar system
Spans 900m
150m between each
How do you tell 1000ft apart on a runway?
Illuminated runway distance markers
What is barrier lighting fitted with?
Red lighting with a single green light in the middle.
AIBs? (Aerodrome identification beacon)
Provided at military emergency diversion aerodromes
All 24 hour flying
The beacon flashes two letter morse code.
Military is Red
Civilian is Green
Signal is visible up to 30nm(Nautical miles)
Aerodrome retro reflective marker systems?

Minimum operating strip kit
Towable trailer which contains all the lights and cables required to provide an emergency lighting strip or tactical landing strip
When are lighting inspections conducted?
Daily before flying
Before the start of night flying
Obstructions?
Any object that could be considered dangerous to air systems in flight or on the manoeuvring area.
Permanent obstruction markings?
Large obstructions, red and white check
Small obstructions, tone down.
Lit by 2 red Omni directional lights marking the outer perimeter
Temporary obstructions?
Any object in flight or off the ground that does not occupy permanent fixed positions.
By day Red and white or orange and white barriers or LE58 portable lighting by night.
