Mercutio Flashcards
Main ideas:
1) Shakespeare uses Mercutio to explore atheist beliefs and what occurs as a result of being blasphemous
2) Represents stereotypical masculinity - reinforces how men were supposed to behave and exposes contemporary notions
3) Mercutio’s violent actions develop throughout the play - men were often influenced by pride, honour and status in the Elizabethan era.
4) Mercutio is a very direct and combative individual who encapsulates comic relief and becomes progressively cynical - he drives the play forward and represents a character who isn’t brainwashed into conforming to stereotypical behaviours
A plague…
a both your houses
Mens eyes were made to look and…
let them gaze, I will not budge for no man’s pleasure
They have made…
worms meat of me
O calm dishonourable…
vile submission
Ask me tomorrow and I…
shall be a grave man
If love be rough with you…
be rough with love, prick love for pricking and you beat love down
