Main ideas about Juliet:
In the beginning play, Shakespeare uses Juliet as a microcosm of how women in the Elizabethan era were supposed to be submissive; however Juliet develops her own character as the play progresses defying societal norms. Initially, Juliet is portrayed as an obedient and compliant daughter who is very impressionable - those in her sphere of influence cause her to replicate their behaviours. As the play develops, Juliet’s character evolves and is now somewhat reckless, possibly Shakespeare is exposing the dangers of young love and not abiding by societal laws considering the play ends tragically. Furthermore, Shakespeare also focuses on the victimisation of women in a rigid society and is possibly criticising how women are oppressed by allowing Juliet to do as she pleases whenever possible.
Love develops young people and helps them mature/ grow.
