What is the difference between aphasia, circumlocutions, paraphasias, and neologism
aphasia- disorder or reception or expression of speech
circumlocutions-phrase substituted for a word that can’t be recalled
paraphasias-malformed, wrong, invented words that are close to the one you want
neologisms-made up words
How to test for aphasia
word comprehension (reception): follow 2 stage command
repetition (expression) “no ifs, ands, or buts”
naming: name parts of a watch
reading comp: reads a command then follows it
writing: write a sentence
Difference between Wernicke’s area and Broca’s area
W: post. sup. temporal lobe shows paraphasias and neologisms
B: post. inf. frontal lobe, has difficulty writing words but can understand them
Basic cognitive functions
orientation, attention, remote memory, recent memory, and new learning ability
Higher cognitive functions
info and vocab, calculating ability, abstract thinking, proverbs, similarities, constructional ability
What is remote memory
oldest form of memory
birthdays, anniversarys, schools attended, jobs
may be impaired in late dementia
What is recent memory
events of the day like weather, what they had for breakfast
imparired in early dementia and delirium
What is new learning ability
may be impaired in dementia, delirium ,and can be affected by depression or anxiety
mini-mental status exam
Orientation (what is the and where are we questions)
Registration (name 3 objects)
Attention and calculation (Serial sevens, spell WORLD backwards)
Recall (repeat those 3 objects)
Language (point to object, repeat phrase, follow 3 step command, read and obey, write a sentence, copy pentagon picture)
