What is mental health?
state of social and emotional wellbeing in which individuals cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and contribute to their community
What is the continuum of mental health?

What does it mean to be mentally healthy?
- generally positive state of wellbeing
- able to work productively and cope with the stresses of everyday life
What does it mean to have a mental problem?
- disruption to a person’s normal state of emotional and social wellbeing
- problem affects the way a person thinks
- usually mild and temporary = doesn’t last as long as a mental disorder
What does it mean to have a mental disorder?
- psychological state of someone with emotional and behavioural problems serious enough for psychological intervention
What are some characteristics of being mentally healthy?
- able to cope with stressors
- regular sleep patterns
- manage emotions
- socially and physically active
What are the characteristics of having a mental health problem?
- mild to moderate stress
- difficulty coping
- changes in sleep patterns
What are the characteristics of having a mental disorder?
- high distress
- excessive anxiety
- big changes in sleep
- withdrawls and avoidance behaviour
What is an internal factor?
biological and psychological factors within a person
What is an external factor?
social factors outside a person
What are the psychological factors?
- involves our though processes and the processing of sensory info
What are the biological factors?
- involves our factors that are determined by our genetics and our bodies
What are the social factors?
- involves factors from work and school = environment
What are some examples of some psychological factors?
- thoughts
- coping skills
- emotions
- beliefs and attitudes
What are some biological factors?
- genes
- gender
- immune system
- hormones
