requires the participant to be aware of the nature of the experiment and any risks associated with it and what is expected of them

= cannot give informed consent

by their guardian = written consent
When can deception be used in a experiment?
when the ethics committee find the research of great value
What is a placebo?
treatment that has no effect
What is a placebo effect?
when a person records a change in their behaviour due to believing they received the actual treatment
What are some benefits of the placebo treatment?
- make people feel better temporarily
- can improve patient symptoms
- improve overall treatment methods
What are some concerns about the placebo treatment?
- requires a person to go without a treatment = suffering
- some people can receive the wrong type of treatment
- doctors are required to give a patient the right type of treatments for their mental health problems = abusing their roles
When must researchers not administer a place effect?
when there is a known risk of significant harm in the absence of treatment
