What is the definition of a ‘mental disorder’?
‘Mental disorder’ = an abnormal state of mind (continuous/intermittent) characterised by delusions, or by disorders of mood, perception, volition or cognition of such degeree that it: serious danger to health OR seriously diminshes capacity of self care

What is a restricted patient?
These are patients who are subject to a compulsory treatment order but are considered to present a danger to the public.
What is a special patient?
These are patients who are detained by way of a court order if they are found to be criminally insane or unfit to plead. The category also includes people on remand for a psychiatric report.
What do you do when restricted/special patients have absconded or are absent without leave?
May be apprehended and returned to hospital at any time.
What do you do when compulsory treatment patients have absconded or are absent without leave?
May be apprehended and returned/taken to hospital if apprehended within three months of going missing.
After absent for how long is a patient deemed to be released from their compulsory treatment order?
Three months.
Where must you take a person after you have apprehended them under section 109?
You must take the person to a police station, hospital, surgery or other appropriate place, and a doctor’s examination must be arranged as soon as practicable.
