process of searching for and taking a person to a desginated facility for examination by a physician

- lawyers can visit at any time

must be completed not more than 1 month after admission certificates are issues
- must include anticipated treatment, criteria for release, criteria for privs

information
any person can present information under oath before provincial court judge
- person bringing information must believe the person named meets the 4 criteria

apprehension
police believe person should be examined in the interest of of their safety

warrant
judge warrant that allows officer to apprehend person to take them to institution for examination
medical personal that can complete mental status exam from a form
doctor, psychiatrist. nurse practitioner
form 1
admission
- one admission certificate authroizes person for 72 hours
- second qualified professional must independently examine person and complete another certificate within 24 hours; one of the two people must be a physician
- once second certificate is complete they are valid for 1 month
- needs to meet 4 criteria
form 2
renewal
- 2 qualified professionals must believe the person meets the 4 criteria and one must be a psychiatrist
- 1st renewal is good for one month, the 2nd renewal is good for another month, the 3rd renewal is valid for 6 months
form 19
community treatment order
- for people with severe mental disorders who have demonstrated that without community support treatment they are likely to relapse
- 2 qualified professionals must independently conclude that a patient meets the specific criteria; one must be psychiatrist
form 12
request for review panel
can be requested by anyone and is automatic at 6 months
- panel must include lawyer, psychiatrist, physician, member of public

if patient refuses treatment the review board may order specific treatment at the request of an appropriate healthcare professional
