Integrative approach in mental health
Psychiatric mental health adopts a bio, psycho, social, spiritual model (domain are separate but interdependent)
Biological approach:
- Physical functioning interventions (excercise, relaxation, sleep and nutrition)
- Biological tx, pharmacologic agents and electroconvulsive therapy
Psychological approach
- Cognitive appreaches, behavior therapy and chilent education
- Interpersonal communication techniques
Social approach
- family based interventions
- public attitudes and beliefs about mental health - supportive/stigmatizing
Spiritual apprach
-Connection among self, others and universe over time and space.
Most common form of psychopathology:
Anxiety disorders
Ethical issues in psychiatric mental health
Behavior control and restraint (pt may be involontary commited to care wihtout their consent, legimated coercion–>need to be monitored and used with care)
Patient may be restrained chemically, physically or by being placed ‘‘in seclusion’’ if
they put self or others at risk for harm (measures should be used with sensitivity and caution only when necessary)
Locked doors were found to be associated with
Increased patient aggreassion and poorer tx satisfaction.
Seclusion is perceived as
punitive

Lack of contact with nurses intensified:
feelings of exclusion, rejection, abandonment and isolation.
Experience of women with histories of childhood sexual abuse with restraint:
Triggered by self-harm, do not view it as necessary or helpful in staying safe, traumatic, terrifying and degrading.
Suggested clinical responses:
Empathic engagement, constant observation, comfort measures and outlets for aggression.
