The body’s ability to manage life’s problem and to derive satisfaction from living throughout the various stages of life.
5 Criteria for Mental Health
- The development of mature patterns of problem solving.
- Ability to cope with crisis beyond the assistance of family and friends.
- A value system characterized by respect and trust for self and others
- Having fulfilling interpersonal relationships
- Having satisfying work and work relationships.
8 basic assumptions regarding Behavior which have Implications for nursing
- All behavior is Purposeful
- All behavior is a response to changed conditions in the individual’s total environment
- The response of an individual in a specific situation is the best that he is capable of making at the given moment.
- What an individual perceives as happening to him is more influential in determining his behavior than what is actually happening to him.
- The provision for the satisfaction of the individuals existing needs will allow for the mergence of more mature needs.
- There is inherent in every individual a potential for striving forward.
- There is both an overt and a covert aspect of every behavioral response.
- The individual in our culture stodgier most of his needs through relationships with other individuals or groups of individuals.
Mental Illness
Behavior that is threatening and disruptive of relationships or that deviates significantly from behavior that is considered socially acceptable.
*very common: 1:4 affected every year
Homeostasis
THE BODY’S TENDENCY TO MAINTAIN ITSELF IN A STATE OF EQUILIBRIUM AND STABILITY WHILE CONTINUALLY BEING EFFECTED BY THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT.
The body needs to stay in homeostasis to feel well.
We all want to achieve Homeostasis!
Stress
The body’s arousal response to any demand, change or perceived threat in a person’s internal or external environment.
Stress: Arousal Responses
Physical arousal- body chemistry changes, muscle tension, increased BP, increased HR, peristaltic action
Psychological arousal- brain prepares to deal with the stress (emotional response)
Stressor
Circumstance or event that elicits the stress response.
Internal stressors
Pregnancy, menopause, guilt(emotions), diseases
External Stressors
Change in family role, loss of job, change in social role, peer rejection
Positive/Negative stress
Positive:
Falling in love, getting engaged/married
Negative:
Rejection, Guilt, Negative body image, Embarrassment, breaking off relationship

CHILD
- Beginning new school
- Establishing peer relationships
- Peer competition

ADOLESCENT
- Changing physique
- Relationships involving sexual attraction
- Exploring independence
- Choosing a career

YOUNG ADULT
- Marriage
- Leaving home, managing a home, become autonomous
- Getting started in an occupation
- Having Children

MIDDLE ADULT
- Physical changes of aging- pains/aches
- Maintaining social status and standards of living
- Helping teenage children become independent(support/guidance)
- Aging parents
