why use mental state assessment
- provides basis for collecting information to diagnose and develop treatment plan
difference between affect and mood
mood = what the person feels like in their pwn words
affect = what you the interviewer observes and hears

- Dysthymia
- Major depressive disorder
- Post Natal depression
- Bipolar affective disorder
What is dysthymia, S+S
- Chronic mild depression characterised by 2 years of depressive symptoms

- Low self esteem
- fatigue
- hopelessness
- insomnia or hypersomnia
- eating changes
- poor concentration
What is major depressive disorder + S+S
- pervasive and persistent depressed mood
- decrease in interest or pleasure in activities
S+S
- low self esteem
- significant weight changes
- insomnia or hypersomnia
- fatigue
- feeling worthless
- can’t concentrate
- suicidal ideation
What is post natal depression and S+S
- Strong feeling of sadness, anxiety and tiredness that lasts a long time after giving brith.

- Seem not interested in your baby or other family members
- difficult to do everyday tasks
what is Bipolar 1 disorder
- one or more manic episodes or manic and depression episodes
what is Bipolar II disorder
- has one or more depressive only episodes with at least one hypomanic episode
