Mental Health Flashcards
What are examples of atypical antipsychotics?
Haloperidol and chlorpromazine
What are the indications of typical antipsychotics?
- Schizophrenia and other psychoses
- Mania
- Sedation
- Psychomotor agitation
- Nausea and vomiting
What is the MOA for typical antipsychotics?
- Mixed antagonists at muscarinic, histaminergic, dopaminergic, serotonergic and adrenergic receptors
- Blockage of D2 receptors
What motion ring and pre treatment are needed for typical antipsychotics?
ECG before initiating drug then annually
Drug interactions of typical antipsychotics?
- Chlorpromazine may enhance CNS depressant effect of opioids, sedatives and alcohol
- Other drugs that elongate the QT interval - increased arrhythmias
- SSRIs e.g citalopram
- Antihypertensives - increased hypotensive effect
What are cautions of typical antipsychotics?
- Severe CVD
- hepatic impairment
- epilepsy
- CNS depression and coma
What are side effect of typical antipsychotics?
- Sedation
- Extra-pyramidal symptoms
- Postural hypotension
- cardiac arrythmias
- hyperprolactinaemia
- Rare: neuroleptic malignant syndrome
What class of drug is chlorpromazine?
Typical antipsychotic
What class of drug are risperidone, clozapine, olanzipine?
Atypical antipsychotics
What are the indications of atypical antipsychotics?
More acute settings
- Psychomotor agitation
- Poorly controlled schizophrenia
- Borderline personality disorder
What is the MOA of atypical antipsychotics?
- Post synaptic D2 receptor antagonist
- Located in the dopaminergic pathway of the brain
What is the treatment of mania in Bipolar disorder?
1) Antipsychotic (atypical or typical) - haloperidol, olanzapine, risperidone
2) Lithium
3) Sodium valproate
What is the treatment for depressive bipolar disorder?
1) Atypical antipsychotic - Quetiapine
2) SSRI - Fluoxetine
3) Atypical antipsychotic - Olanzapine
4) Lamotrigen
What is a side effect of tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline?
Acute angle-closure glaucoma
