Autism Spectrum Disorder
A difference in how the child’s brain works that shapes how they interact.
Level 1: Requires support
Level 2: Requires substantial support
Level 3: Requires very substantial support
Fails to respond to words, poor eye contact/facial expressions, repetitive movements and words, routines/no changes
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Where neural pathways do not mature at the same rate as a person without. Low levels of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine.
Inattention, Hyperactivity, impulsivity, disorganization, mood swings, impatience
Schizophrenia
A type of spectrum disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, impacted motor and psychological functioning
Positive Symptoms: Delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech
Negative Symptoms: Leads to psychosis, reduced emotional expression and willpower
Catatonia: Lack of movement
Word Salad: : Lack of communication
Major Depressive Disorder
(Depression) Common mental health disorder that negatively affects how one feels, thinks, acts, and perceives the world.
Feels sad, empty, hopeless, diminished interests, weight/appetite change, slowed thought
Persistent Depressive Disorder
2 year or longer period of depressed mood, most of the day, for more days than not
Same symptoms as major Depressive disorder, intensity can change
Bipolar 1 & 2
Condition that causes subjects to experience periods of extreme mood swings varying between energetic highs and Depressive lows.
Depression, mania, suicidal thoughts, restless behavior, energetic mode, psychosis
Deficit of norepinephrine and serotonin
Bipolar 2: Less severe
Specific Phobia
Intense, irrational fear of a certain object or situation
Avoidance, panic attacks, physical and emotional distress, fear, nausea
Social Anxiety Disorder
The persistent fear of being watched or judged by others
Sweating, trembling, rapid heart rate, nervous, self-conscious, avoidance
Panic Disorder
Unexpected panic attacks when sudden fear hits a person or feelings of no control
Worry some, fear of being out of control. pounding heart, sweating, chills
Agoraphobia
Intense fear and avoidance of situations outside of one’s control where escape is not possible
Ex: Fear of open/closed spaces, leaving home alone, large crows, public transportation
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Excessive anxiety and worry about events or activities that you do daily
Worry about everyday tasks, restless, struggling to sleep, headaches, trembling
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Uncontrollable and recurring thoughts and obsessions paired with repetitive and excessive behaviors
Fear of something happening
Ex: Repeatedly checking doors
Obsessions: Repetitive thoughts
Compulsions: Actions
Hoarding
Persistent difficulties with discarding personal possessions even with items with no value
Upset when someone suggests discarding an item, excess clutter. attachment, excessive shopping
Anorexia Nervosa
Unwarranted fear of being overweight which causes body dysmorphia or extreme thinness. Can be fatal
Restricted eating, extreme thinness, intense fear of gaining weight
Bulimia Nervosa
Recurrent and frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food and feeling lack of self control (binge) then using methods to compensate (vomiting)
Sore throat, acid reflex disorder, swollen salivary glands
