Define phobia
Characterised by an anxiety disorder which cause an irrational fear of a particular object or situation
Behavioural characteristics of phobia
Avoidance - person immediate response to avoid object or situation
Panic- uncontrollable physical response when face to face with phobia lading to stress, anxiety, freezing
Emotional characteristics if phobia
Anxiety- uncontrollable response to panic, difficult to relax
Fear- intense state, linked to fight or flight, extreme alertness in presence of phobia
Cognitive characteristics of phobia
Irrational beliefs- incorrect perception of danger
Selective attention- difficulty to direct attention elsewhere when presence with phobia
Define depression
A mood disorder defined by a consistent long lashing sense of sadness
Behavioural characteristics of depression
Change in activity Levels- lacking energy and always tired, changes in appetite
Emotional characteristics of depression
Low self esteem, feeling worthless, anger
Cognitive characteristics of depression
Poor concentration- can’t give their full attention to a task

Define obsessive compulsive disorder OCD
Anxiety disorder where anxiety arises from obsessions (persistent thoughts) and compulsions ( repetitive behaviour)
What are behavioural characteristics of OCD
Repetitive behaviour used to reduce anxiety eg excessive hand washing,
Compulsions used to reduce anxiety
