Q

Describe REBT

A

Ellis developed his ABC model to include D (dispute) E (effective)
They challenge irrational thoughts through dispute argument

The therapies will dispute the patients irrational beliefs and replace them with more effective beliefs
There are different types of disputes used:
Logical dispute- where the therapist questions the logic of a persons thoughts
Empirical dispute- where the therapist seeks evidence for a persons thoughts

AO3

A

+research to demonstrate the effectiveness - march et al
-CBT was as effective as antidepressants- 327 pps with depression - 81% of antidepressant group and 81% of of CBT group Improved
— CBT requires motivation
- patients with depression may not engage or even attend the sessions- antidepressants don’t require motivation so my be more effective-CBT can’t be the sole treatment
— overemphasis on the role of cognition as the primary cause of depression
- other social factors- ie people suffering with abuse don’t need to change their negative or irrational beliefs - CBT ineffective until their circumstances of abuse has changes
— CBT success is not due to beck or Ellis
- due to the relationship between client and therapist- having someone to
Talk may be the crucial component of a positive outcome
