Biological Approcah Treating OCD Flashcards
What are the two types of drug therapy used to test OCD
1) antidepressants drugs
2) anti anxiety drugs
How has the antidepressant SSRI a drug therapy for OCD
Serotonin released from the pre synaptic cell into the synapse travels to receptors on post synaptic neuron
Serotonin which is not absorbed into post synaptic neuron instead it’s reasoned into the sending cell
SSRI increase level of serotonin available in synapse by preventing it to be reabsorbed into the sending cell
Concentration of serotonin increase in synapse leading to improve mood and reduced anxiety
How does BZs work as an anti anxiety drug
Enhances the neurotransmitter GABA which tells neurons In the brain to slow down or stop firing
This leads to reduce anxiety which is a result of obsessive thoughts
GABA has receptor sites at synapse which locks into one so the flow of chloride ions increase causing nervous system to slow causing patient to feel relaxed
AO3
+ research supper for their effectiveness
- SRI was significantly more effective than placebos in treatment of OCD-however these studies are only concluding the short term effectiveness of drug treatments not long term
— cost effective
- CBT requires patients to be motivated and engage, attending sessions- reduce time taken off work increasing productivity in workforce- economic implications
— side effects
- some mild side effects but some serious like hallucinations, high blood pressure- BZs are highly addictive causing increased aggression and long term memory impairments
— drug treatments treat symptoms not cause
-SRRI increase serotonin to reduce anxiety and alleviate symptoms- CBT more effective for long term results
