Menstural cycle Flashcards
What are the 2 phases
Ovarian and uterine
What are the phases of the ovarian
Follicular and luteal
What are the phases of the uterine
Menstrual, proliferative, secretory
What happens in the early follicular phase
No ovarian hormones,
increase FSH which then causes follicular growth and theca interna cells to appear and produce oestrogen
Dominant follicle the granulosa cells start to produce inhibin
What cells produce inhibin
Granulosa cells in dominant follicile
What happens in late follicular phase
Oestrogen and inhibin causes negative feedback to FSH
Also increase LH receptors
Increase theca cells to produce oestrogen
Ovulatory phase
Day 14
Positive feedback = LH surge = ovulation
Granulosa cells produce progesterone
What meiosis is complete
Just 1
When does meiosis 2 complete
After fertilsation
What happens in luteal phase
Follicle leutinized = corpus L
O and P secreted in large quantities
Negative feedback = low Lh and FSH
What happens in uterine cycle
Oestrogen causes proliferation of epithelium
O and P cause secretory epithelium
What are the uterine layers
Endo, myo, peri
What are the layers of endometrium
Function and basal
What does does the endometrium look like in early proliferative phase
Spare glands, straight
What does the endometrium look like in late proliferative phase
Thicker functional layer, glands coiled
