Menstruation Flashcards
2 cycles in mestruation name and explain
Ovarian cycle which is the development of the follicle, ovulation and formation of corpus luteum
uterine cycle which controls the preparation of the endometrium in the uterus for pregnancy
Ovarian cycle consists of 3 phases name and explain
Follicular phase - development of Grafiaan follicle (day 1 - 14)
ovulation - release of oocyte (day 14)
Luteal phase - development of corpus luteum (from day 15)
development of graafian cycle
oogenesis occurs and ovum is covered in graafian follicle, every cycle develops one graafian follicle, follicle fluid will continue increasing until it bursts the follicle and wall of ovary releasing egg into fallopian tube.
ovulation phase
egg bursts into infundibulum, process called ovulation.
grafian follicle stimulates hypophysis which secretes LH which stimulated ovulation
luteal phase
after ovulation graafian follicle develops yellow cell called corpus luteum. corpus luteum secretes progesterone and oestrogen, this allows implantation to occur, if implantation is unsuccesfull corpus luteum disintegrates
uterine cycle consists of 3 phases
menstruation - shedding of lining
proliferative - preparing for fertilization
secretory - preparing for implantation
Menstruation (1-7 days)
no fertilization causes endometrium to breakdown and discard itself and unfertilized ovum
proliferative phase (up to 5 days)
endometrium prepares for possible fertilization, upper walls of endometrium thicken. oestrogen causes this thickening and causes cervix to release mucus to make sperm mobility to reach ovum easier
secretory phase
