Menstrual Cycles Flashcards
How much is one regular tampon
5mL
How much is a super tampon
10mL
How much is a regular pad
5mL
Follicular Phase
Egg released from ovary and new endometrium layer starts growing. Last 5 days of follicular phase the woman is more fertile
Luteal Phase
Starts on ovulation day when the egg is released
What Horne is higher in the luteal phase
Progesterone
What hormone is highest during follicular phase
Estrogen (lowers basal body temp by 0.3C)
Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)
Origin: Hypothalamus What it does: Stimulates FSH and LH from Pituitary Gland
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Origin: Secreted by the pituitary gland What it does: Stimulates growth and development of ovarian follicles in the ovaries
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Origin: released from pituitary gland. What it does: Triggers ovulation and supports development of corpus luteum
Estrogen
Origin: produced mostly by ovaries What it does: Development of female reproductive tissues and secondary sexual characteristics (breasts). Regulates mensteral cycle
Progesterone
Origin: Secreted by corpus lutes in ovaries. What it does: prepares uterus for potential pregnancy by maintaining the uterine lining and supporting early pregnancy
When does the first cycle (Mecarche) usually begin?
Ages 11-12
How many does does the menstrual cycle average
28 days with ranges of 21-35
When does menopause occur
45-55
What are reasons the menstrual cycles are interrupted
1 pregnancy followed by stress, starvation and illness
Menstrual phase
First phase of uterine cycle. Occurs 14 days after ovulation. Approx 25-65mL last during this cycle
Proliferative Phase of Uterine Cycle
First 2 weeks. Dominated by estrogen so endometrium thickens wth blood. Surge of LH at 14 days. FSH increases eventually causeing an egg to release
What is a Corpus Luteum
A ruptured follicle that is developed by LH into a corpus lutetium
Secretory Phase of Uterine Cycle
Corpus leteum released in proliferative phase produces progesterone making the uterus more sticky for implantation thus increasing blood supply to uterus. If egg is not fertilized then estrogen decreases rapidly causing the menstrual phase
Menstrual phase of Uterine cycle
Ischemic Endometrium is shed (period blood). Lasts 3-5 days.
Mittelschmerz
When women get cramping during ovulation
Fertilization of an egg
Egg only viable for fertilization 12-24 hours after release. Takes 3- days for egg to reach uterine cavity
