Meniscal bearings Flashcards
What do meniscal bearing prostheses consist of?
Metal femoral component
Metal tibial component
HDP meniscus
What are the mechicanal advantages of a meniscal bearing prosthesis?
Large contact area = reduce contact stresses
Low degree of constraint - avoid high stresses , other than compression, during load transfer
How does the meniscus move during flexion and extension?
Forwards during extension
Backwards during flexion
How do meniscal bearing prostheses depart from the designs of most knee porstheses?
They do not move in a similar way to the normal knee
What is the prinicpal disadvantage of meniscal bearing designs?
Increased technical difficulty in achieving ligamentous balance and overall alignment without rising dislocation in the moving bearing
