Meningitis (bacterial) Flashcards
An inflammation of the fluid and membrane (meninges) surrounding brain and spinal cord
Meningitis
The inflammatory response to infection in meningitis causes _____ CSF glucose and CSF _____protein.
decreased glucose, increased protein
Causative organisms of meningitis
- Streptococcus pnuemoniae
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Neisseria meningitidis
Modes of transmission of meningitis
Droplet, Direct Contact
Incubation period of meningitis
2-10 days
Average incubation period of meningitis
6-7 days
Definitive diagnostic test for meningitis to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Lumbar Tap, Spinal Tap, Spinal Puncture, Thecal Puncture, Rachiocentesis
A test for subarachnoid obstruction, also known as lumbar manometric test performed by compressing the jugular veins for 10 seconds on each side of the neck during the lumbar puncture.
Queckenstedt’s test
Pathognomonic signs of meningitis
- Nuchal rigidity
- Kernig’s Sign
- Brudzinski’s Sign
severe arching of the spine
Opisthotonos
abnormal flexion of the arms with the extension of the legs
Decorticate
an abnormal body posture that involves the arms and legs being held straight out, the toes being pointed downward, and the head and neck being arched backward
Decerebrate
hypertension, bradycardia, bradypnea
Cushing’s triad
unequal pupils, due to the compression of CN III or the oculomotor.
Anisocoria
double vision, due to the compression of the longest cranial nerve, CN VI or the abducens.
Diplopia
