Slow growing benign tumours that cause increased intracranial pressure.
what do meningiomas do?
They are space occupying lesions and increase intracranial pressure.
how common are meningiomas?
very common
most common tumour after pituitary adenomas
how do meningiomas occur?
as a complication to radiotherapy
what do meningiomas cause and how ?
They can end up pressing on the visual pathways which cause visual disturbances.
how are meningiomas diagnosed?
- MRI imaging
- Biopsy
what are complications of meningiomas?
-Loss of Visual Acuity
-Visual field defects
-Endocrine dysfunction
-Raised intracranial pressure
-Seizures
what is the treatment/management for meningiomas?
surgical removal
( if it doesn’t work properly and the meningiomas come back - radiotherapy)
what are risk factors for meningiomas?
-Female
-Genetics
-Age
-Head injury
-Cranial irradiation
