Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
The study of the passing of traits from parents to offspring
Genetics
Characteristics of an organism, such as hair color (physical), or gentle (personality)
Traits
Sections of DNA that have instructions to make a trait
Genes
On a pair of chromosomes, one allele per chromosome; is an option for a gene
Alleles
Trait that will show up even if there is a recessive gene present (RR, Rr)
Dominant trait
Trait that is masked by a dominant trait, but can show up if another recessive trait is present (rr)
Recessive trait
One dominant, one recessive (Rr)
Heterozygous
Two of the same allele (RR, rr)
Two dominants, or two recessives
Homozygous
The description of the trait in letters (BB means dominant blue eyes-BB is the genotype)
Genotype
Physical description of a trait (BB means blue eyes, “Blue eyes” is the phenotype)
Phenotype
