Mendel's Law of Heredity Flashcards
Laws of heredity
How traits are passed to offspring.
Prevalence of traits
This means some traits are more likely to be passed on than others.
Alleles
Each gene for a trait comes in varieties. Dominant trait is always expressed. Recessive is expressed when both alleles are recessive
Genotype
Combination of two alleles. Offspring inherit two copies of each gene, one from each parent.
Inherited traits
Passed from parent to offspring through gametes (egg or sperm) Each gamete carries 1 chromosome of the pair.
Human gametes
These contain 23 chromosomes. When an egg and sperm fuse together (fertilization) a cell with two copies of each chromosomes (two copies of each gene) results
Zygote
Contains 46 chromosomes.
