Mendel Flashcards
who was gregor mandel
Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) was an Austrian monk whose work on pea plants founded the modern science of genetics
what did mendel already know?
The male part of each pea flower produces pollen (containing sperm)
The female part of each pea flower produces egg cells
During sexual reproduction, sperm and egg cells join in a process called fertilization
Mendel had true-breeding pea plants that, if allowed to self-pollinate, would produce offspring identical to themselves
He reasoned that the biological inheritance of traits is determined by factors (genes) that are passed from one generation to the next
Mendel’s first experiment
When he cross-pollinated true-breeding plants with different traits, the offspring only demonstrated one of the two traits
