Memory - WMM Flashcards
Central executive
Drives WMM
Makes decisions and allocates slave systems to tasks
Limited processing capacity
Phonological loop
Slave system
Deals with auditory info
Divided into 2 components:
Inner ear (holds info in speech based form for 1-2 seconds)
Inner voice (allows for maintainance rehearsal)
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Slave system
Stores visual and/or spatial info
Limited capacity (3 or 4 objects)
Visio-spatial sketchpad
Slave system
Stores visual and/or spatial info
Limited capacity (3 or 4 objects)
Episodic buffer
Slave system
Added to model in 2000
A temporary store of info
Integrates visual, spatial, and verbal info processed by other stores
Maintains sense of time sequencing
Limited capacity (4 chunks)
WMM
Expansion of MSM
Develops concept of STM
Which researcher support WMM
What did he do?
What did he find?
Baddely + Hitch (1973) - dual-task study
Ppts followed a spot of light moving in a circle while performing another visual or verbal task
Ppts performed badly on visual task BUT NOT on verbal task - VSS became overloaded by having to deal with 2 tasks, but verbal task made use of another store
STM has separate components for visual and auditory info
Evaluate this research
✅Significant research suppport for existence of separate stores in STM
⛔️HOWEVER much of research highly controlled, artificial lab studies, or unrepresentative case studies - may undermine validity of support for model
⛔️Only concerns itself with STM - not much detail or insight into LTM, therefore not a comprehensive model of memory
