What did Tulving say about to types of long term memory?
A
- Tulving was one of the first to realise that the MSM was too simplistic that the WMM did not address LTM
- therefore he proposed that there are three types of LTM stores

- personal experiences from a specific point in time
- ‘mental diary’
- requires cues, context dependant
- memory of events
- time referenced
- requires conscious effort to recall
- explicit memory
- examples: first day of school, birthdays or first crush

- memory of factual knowledge
- ‘mental encyclopaedia’
- not cue dependant
- not time referenced
- requires conscious effort to recall
- explicit memories
- examples: times tables, the capital of england, battle of hastings

- knowing a skill or action / knowing how to do something
- not cue dependant
- not time referenced
- implicit memory ‘knowing how’
- muscle memory
- no conscious effort to recall
- examples: riding a bike, playing piano, how to write
