MEMORY - multi-store model Flashcards
1
Q
who proposed the multi-store model?
A
- ATKINSON and SHIFFRIN
2
Q
explain the multi-store model
A
- an environmental stimulus enters the sensory register
- some information decays, but if attention is given the stimulus enters short-term memory
- this may be recalled, maintained (maintenance rehearsal), or prolong rehearsed to enter long-term memory
- this may then be retrieved to short-term memory again
3
Q
what is the coding, capacity, and duration of the sensory register?
A
- sensory specific
- infinite
- < 0.5 seconds
4
Q
what is the coding, capacity, and duration of short-term memory?
A
- acoustic
- 5-9 chunks
- 18-30 seconds
5
Q
what is the coding, capacity, and duration of long-term memory?
A
- semantic
- infinite
- infinite
6
Q
EVALUATION
what did BADDELEY do? and how does this relate to the multi-store model?
A
- asked people to remember lists of acoustically similar and dissimilar words and semantically similar and dissimilar words
- people struggled with the acoustically similar words in the short-term
- people struggled with the semantically similar words in the long-term
so. .. - supports proposal of how these two memories are stored
7
Q
EVALUATION
artificial tasks/materials
A
- many studies in memory are using artificial materials such as random syllables or digits
- in real-life, people remember names and faces
so. .. - studies lack real-life application and so reduces their validity in supporting the theories they test
8
Q
EVALUATION
what did SHALLICE and WARRINGTON do? and how does this relate to the multi-store model?
A
- studies amnesia patient, KF
- KF could remember words he read himself easier than words read aloud to him
so. .. - suggests short-term memory is more complex than the model suggests
(multiple ways it is stored)
