Memory - Multi Store Model Flashcards
To understand the basics of memory terminology and the features of the Multi-store model (Atkinson and Shiffrin)
What do we mean by the term encoding?
Encoding refers to how we store information in memory
What do we mean by the term capacity?
Capacity refers to how much information we can store
What do we mean by the term duration?
Duration refers to the length of time that we can store information
Give two ways in which information could be encoded - define each.
Acoustically, semantically, proceedurally, visually, phonologically, episodically
Is the capacity of STM larger or smaller than that of the Sensory Memory Store?
Smaller
What is the duration of STM without rehearsal?
Around 30 seconds
Why is rehearsal important in reference to the STM
Keep information in STM and also helps encoding to LTM
What is the capacity of STM?
5-9 items (7+-2)
Can you identify one study that investigated capacity in STM? Describe in one sentence the methods in the study
Jacobs, Miller etc
How long (duration) does information remain in LTM?
Virtually Permanent
How is the LTM memory used to deal with current ‘situations’?
STM uses the LTM to compare information and recognise it
What is the duration of the Sensory Memory store?
Less than 1-3 seconds (very short)
What do we mean by proceedural memory?
Remembering HOW we do something - eg. riding a bike
What do we mean by semantic memory?
Remembering the MEANING of something eg. that Paris is a capital city
Can you identify one study that investigate the DURATION of STM? Breifly describe the study
Peterson and Peterson or any similar study from our list
