Memory Improvement Flashcards
Who created a study to research organising material?
Jenkins and Russell found that participants tended to group associated words together in recall even when separated in the original presentation for example knife and fork.
What study supports Jenkins and Russell study?
Tulving found that participants were organising and trunking material to be learned into easily remembered groups so if the word contained cat daisy sock giraffe they would group it into clothes and animals
What is the method of Loci?
Loci is a strategy that uses imagery. It’s used for remembering a list of words objects. The items to be remembered are associated with locations.
Give an example of the method of Loci
Let’s say you have a shopping list that contains milk apples and banana you would imagine placing the milk on the stairs the apples on the dining table and the bananas on the chair when you get to the shop you just do a mental tour of your house again.
What is the peg word technique?
The penguin technique is using imagery to remember a set of objects or words. You use words from your memory and associated with a number for example one is a bun, two is shoe.
Given example of the peg word technique?
For example a shopping list associated with the words and numbers so when you remember the number one you think of a bun and a chocolate bar inside a bun etc so then you remember.
What is the first letter mnemonic?
When the first letter of each word is used to create a new sentence.
What is an example of the first letter mnemonic technique?
January February March
Just 🌚 me
SAUCY
What are mnemonic verses?
Little poems that help you remember facts. Mnemonic verses help you remember information by encoding it acoustically.
What is the method of narrative stories
Linking together all the items into a story.
Who conducted a study on the effectiveness of the narrative story technique?
Bower and Clark.
They found that the group that used the story technique remembered the list better meaning this AIDS recall from LTM.
What are mnemonics?
Mnemonics are internal memory strategies that use visual imagery and association to cue recall.
