Experiment 1

A

Participants were shown a film of multiple car crashes they were then asked a series of questions including ‘about how fast were the cars going when they hit each other?’
In different conditions the word hit was replaced with smashed, collided bumped or contacted.
It was seen that participants given the word smashed estimated the highest speed an average of 41 mph and those given the word contacted gave the lowest estimate an average of 32 mph.

What was an additional study supporting misleading information?

A

Loftus and sunny and they showed participants a film of a car accident the eyes asked did you see that broken headlight or did you see a broken headlight. There wasn’t a broken headlight however 7% of those who asked about a broken headlight claimed they saw one compared to 17% in the group asked about the broken headlight so the simple use of the word the is enough to affect the accuracy of people’s memory of an event.
