Working Memory Model Flashcards
What are the key components of the working memory model?
The central executive
The articulatory-phonological loop
The visuospatial sketchpad
What does the working memory model suggest?
It suggests a system involving active processing and short term storage of information.
Who created the working memory model?
Baddeley & Hitch
1974
What does the central executive do?
The CE is in charge of attention. It has a limited capacity and controls two ‘slave’ systems (they also have limited capacity).
What does the Articulatory phonological loop do?
Holds speech based information. It contains a phonological store (inner ear) and an articulatory process (inner voice).
What does the visuo-spatial sketchpad do?
Deals with the temporary storage of visual and spatial information.
Inner scribe.
Visual cache.
What is the inner ear?
The phonological store.
What is the inner voice?
An articulatory process.
What is the visual cache?
Stores information about form and colour.
What did Baddeley and Hitch base their WMM on?
They based their model on results of studies that used interference tasks. They found that performing two tasks that required the same system would result in poor performance.
What study can support the working memory model? (S&W)
Shallice and Warrington found support of the model through the case of KF.
Brain damaged patient with impaired STM. Couldn’t recall words immediately when presented verbally but could when it was visual. This suggested he had an impaired Articulatory loop but his Visuospatial sketchpad was fine.
What is a criticism of the model?
Many psychologists believe the central executive aspect is too simplistic and vague. Their model doesn’t really explain what the CE is exactly apart from being involved in attention.
