Memory- Coding Flashcards
What is coding?
Format in which information is stored
What was the aim of Baddeley’s research into coding?
To see whether information was encoded differently depending on the memory store.
What was the method of Baddeley’s research into coding?
Diff word lists given to 4 ptpt groups.
1-acoustically similar
2-acoustically dissimilar
3-semantically similar
4-semantically dissimilar
Ptpts shown original words and asked to recall in correct order.
Either had to recall straight away or after 15 mins- ST/LT
What were the findings of Baddeleys research into coding?
Immediate recall worse with acoustically similar, after 15 mins recall worse with semantically similar.
Findings support that info is encoded acoustically in STM, and semantically in LTM.
What is a strength of Baddeleys research into coding?
Lab experiment.
All extraneous variables controlled- empirical methods meaning that cause + effect can be established, and can be replicated.
High internal validity.
What is a weakness of Baddeleys research into coding?
Artificial task.
No meaningful information to ptpts- doesn’t replicate daily life and the way people use their memory.
Low ecological validity.
