Memory and Processors Flashcards
1
Q
What is the difference between RAM and ROM
A
- RAM is volatile, while ROM is non-volatile
- RAM can be read from and written to, but ROM is read-only
- RAM is upgradable, while ROM is not
- RAM is used to store temporary data, while ROM is used to store permanent data.
2
Q
What is firmware
A
This is a type of software that controls a hardware device. Ex : firmware for an SSD, firmware for a GPU
3
Q
How does more RAM increase user experience
A
- RAM stores currently running programs
- RAM is faster than secondary storage
- Since many games have a lot of High Resolution graphics, they take up a lot of space.
- When having more RAM there is less swapping with secondary storage.
- This increases the speed of the game, making it smoother.
4
Q
What is the function of a CPU
A
The CPU fetches instructions from the RAM and then executes those instructions.
5
Q
How is the CPU speed measured
A
It is measured in clock cycles per second and this is the number of instructions a CPU can process per second. Measured in : GHz or MHz
