Memory Flashcards
What is learning?
Acquisition of new information/facts
What is memory?
Retention of new information
What are the types of memory?
Procedural (implicit, non-declarative, reflexive) memory
Declarative (explicit) memory
Short (seconds-hours), long (years) and working memory
What is procedural memory?
Skills and habits that have been used so much that they are automatic (ex. riding a bike)
Anatomical substrates include cerebellum (motor skills) and nucleus accumbens (non-motor)
What is declarative (explicit) memory?
The conscious recognition/recollection of learned facts and experiences
Two forms: episodic and semantic
What is episodic declarative memory?
Memory of events
What is semantic declarative memory?
Memory of words, language and rules (facts)
What is working memory?
Recalling a fact/memory for use
May be a form of short term memory
