(Kolb & Wishaw)

Learning and memory definitions

A

Learning - relatively permanent change in behaviour that results from experience.

Memory - the ability to recall or reorganise previous experience.

Q

3 types of memory all important for learning but at different stages

A
Long-term memory (held indefinitely)
Encoding into memory
Working memory (held briefly, access to long term, requires attention, manipulate & organise thoughts 'on-line', frontal cortex)

Q

The three stages of memory?

A
  1. Encoding - transforming info into a memory representation
  2. Consilidation - stabilising a memory trace after learning
  3. Retrieval - reactivation of the stored memory representation

Q

The two types of Amnesia?

A

Anterograde Amnesia - loss of memory ability for things/events after the brain damage, inability to form new memories

Retrograde Amnesia - loss of memory ability for things/events before the brain damage, inability to remember things from past

Q

Name all divisions in long-term memory

A

Short term > long term
v
Non-declarative/procedural, Implicit
(Things you know that you can show by doing)

Declarative, Explicit (things that you know
that you can tell others)
v
Episodic (e.g. remembering first day at uni)

Semantic (e.g. Knowing the capital of Poland)
