Memory Flashcards
How is the sensory register coded?
Sensorily
How is the short term memory coded?
Acoustically
How is the long term memory coded?
Semantically
What is the capacity of the sensory register?
Unlimited
What is the capacity of the short term memory?
7 +/- 2
What is the capacity of the long term memory?
Potentially unlimited
What is the duration of the sensory register?
200-500 ms
What is the duration of the short term memory?
18-30 seconds
What is the duration of the long term memory?
Potentially forever
A study for how the long term memory is coded
Bahrick et al (1975)
Remembering faces of classmates 50 years later
The multi-store model of memory
Atkinson and shiffrin (1968,1971)
Stimulus - Sensory register - short term memory - long term memory
Through rehearsal and retrieval you can bring things back from your LTM and revise
The modalities
Iconic - eyes Echoic - ears Haptic - hands Taste - mouth Olfactory - nose
Types of long term memory
- Episodic - our ability to recall events - a conscious effort to recall
- semantic - less personal and more about facts we share
- procedural - memory for actions, or skills (how we do things) - can recall without conscious awareness or much effort
What’s are the different types of memory stored in the different parts of the brain?
- episodic and semantic memories were recalled from the prefrontal cortex
- the left prefrontal cortex for recalling semantic memories
- the right prefrontal cortex for recalling episodic memories
