Memory Flashcards
Which parts of the brain are involved in episodic memory?
The medial temporal lobes including the hippocampus and parahippocampal cortex
What are the 4 stages of the memory process?
- Registration- input from our senses into the memory system
- Encoding- processing and combining of received information
- Storage- holding of the input in the memory system
- Retrieval- recovering stored information from the memory system (remembering)
What is non-declarative memory?
Familiarity with something, knowledge of how to interact with an object or in a situation without thinking about it- procedural memory for actions or behaviour
What is declarative memory?
Store of our knowledge
What are the two types of declarative memory?
Episodic- memory related to personal experience
Semantic- memory for facts and what we think of as general knowledge
What is the misinformation effect?
Distortion of a memory by misleading post-event information
What is the eyewitness testimony?
It is included within the misinformation effect, fear improves recall (victims have better recall than onlookers)
Give some examples of strategies for enhancing memory?
By assimilation- linking words with previous knowledge/giving words a meaning e.g. ABC- airways, breathing and circulation
Learn by mnemonics
