Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance
What are the 5 myths of coping with loss (Wortman and Silver 1989)?
Distress or depression is inevitable Distress is necessary Importance of working through loss Expectations of recovery Reaching a state of resolution
What are Leventhal’s 5 illness representations?
Identity- e.g. I have a cold with a sore through
Cause- e.g. my cold is because I’m run down
Consequence- my cold will prevent me from doing sport
Timeline- my cold will be gone in a few days
Curability- If I rest, my cold will resolve quickly
What is stress?
Condition that results when the person/enironment transactions lead the individual to perceive a discrepancy between the demands of the situation and the coping resources available
What is procedural information?
Information about the procedures to be undertaken
What is sensory information?
Information about the sensations that may be experienced
What is the dual process hypothesis?
Proposes that procedural and sensory information work in different ways.
Procedural info allows a patient to match ongoing events with expectations in a non-emotional manner whereas sensory info works by mapping a non-threatening interpretation onto these expectations
What is problem focused coping?
Efforts directed at changing the environment in some way or changing one’s own actions or attitudes e.g. seeking health information, changing behaviour

Efforts designed to manage the stress-related emotional responses in order to maintain one’s own moral and allow one to function e.g. meditation, relaxation, deep breathing
What are the strategies for helping children cope with treatment?
Tell- using simple language and a matter of fact style, the child is told what is going to happen before each procedure
Show- the procedure is demonstrated using an inanimate object, a member of staff or themselves
Do- the procedure doesn’t begin until child understands what’ll be done- use prompt distraction techniques
What did the Langer and Rodin 1976 nursing home study show?
Effect of perceived control on health
2 floors in a nursing home
Residents on one floor were given more independence and choice than the the other and this floor showed greater engagement in activities, better wellbeing and lower 18 month mortality rate
