What are the types of memory?

What is working memory?
Short term memory which is concerned with immediate conscious perceptual and linguistic processing
What is explicit memory?
Conscious, intentional recollection of previous experiences and information.
For example: remembering an appointment time, or an event from years ago
What is episodic memory?
Memory of autobiographical events - past personal experiences that occurred at a particular time and place
Can be explicitly stated
What is semantic memory?
Refers to a portion of long term memory that processes ideas and concepts that are not drawn from personal experience.
Includes things that are common knowledge - basic facts acquired over a lifetime like names of colours, sounds of letters
What is implicit memory?
A type of memory in which previous experiences aid the performance of a task - but without conscious awareness of the previous experiences
What part of the brain does working memory?
Prefrontal cortex
What part of the brain does skills & habits (form of implicit memory)?
Cerebellum, basal ganglia
What part of the brain does conditioned reflexes?
Cerebellum
What part of the brain does emotional memory?
Amygdala
What part of the brain lays down new memories?
Hippocampus
