Memory Flashcards
Storage
We put information to the ‘back of our minds’ until it is needed in the future.
Encoding
Sensory information changed so that we can make sense of it.
Retrieval
The ability to recall information from the storage.
Duration
How long info can stay with that memory.
Last up to a few seconds to a lifetime.
Capacity
How much info can be stored with that memory.
Capacity being limitless.
Short term memory
STM
Contains encoded info from the sensory memory.
Capacity between 5 and 9 objects.
Duration is up to 30 seconds.
Long term memory
LTM
The storage of all things in the memory that are not currently being used.
Duration is up to a lifetime.
Capacity is limitless.
Decay
If we do not pay attention to the info in the sensory store, it decays.
Displacement
Info is ‘shunted out’ of storage by new info and becomes forgotten.
Maintenance/Rehersal
Process of repeating info so that it stays in storage, temporarily or permanently.
Semantic Processing
Processing things in relation to what they mean.
Phonetic Processing
Processing things in relation to how they sound.
Structural Processing
Processing things in relation to the way they look.
Proactive Interference
When info that you have already processed interferes with new info you are trying to process, end result that you forget new information.
Retroactive Imterference
When new info interferes with material that you have already processed and stored.
