Memory Flashcards
Short Term Memory (STM)
The limited-capacity memory store
Coding: acoustic
Capacity: 5-9
Duration: 18 seconds
Long Term Memory (LTM)
The permanent memory store
Coding: semantic
Capacity: unlimited
Duration: up to a lifetime
Alan Baddeley (1966) - Procedure
Research on coding
Gave different lists of words to participants to remember
Group 1: acoustically similar
Group 2: acoustically dissimilar
Group 3: semantically similar
Group 4: semantically dissimilar
Participants shown the original words and asked to recall them in the correct order
Alan Baddeley (1966) - Findings
Participants recalling immediately (from STM) tended to do worse with acoustically similar words
Participants recalling after 20 mins (from LTM) tended to do worse with semantically similar words
Information is coded acoustically in STM and semantically in LTM
