What is long term memory

A

The system that stores large amounts of information for a long period of time
Usually things that have made a personal or emotional impact will pass to LTM
Information must be rehearsed to enter LTM
Once info is stored in our LTM it may be difficult to recall on demand

how can we retrieve information from our LTM

  • Retrieval Cues are stimuli that are associated with the info stored in your memory and can help bring it to mind
    Some external aspects are a certain place, sight, sound or smell

Is forgetting bad?

A
  • forgetting may be the brain’s frontline strategy in processing incoming information. Forgetting is essential, because the biological goal of the brain’s memory apparatus is not preserving information, but rather helping the brain make sound decisions
