Tulving (1985)
What did Tulving state about LTM and the MSM?
The MSM too simplistic and inflexible. Said LTM consists of 3 stores, containing different types of info. Not unitary(Atkinson and Shiffrin).
What are the three types of LTM?
Procedural
Declarative- Semantic + Episodic.
What are procedural memories?
Memories of actions+skills.
Implicit types- automatic.
Recall without conscious awareness.
-‘knowing how’
What are episodic memories?
Ability to recall events.
1. Time stamped
2. Includes several details
3. Make conscious effort to recall
Explicit memories.
What are semantic memories?
Knowledge and facts. Not time stamped. Explicit- have to deliberately recall.
Where in the brain are active for semantic and episodic memories?
-Frontal lobe.
-Temporal lobe.
Where in the brain are active for procedural memories?
-Motor cortex
-Cerebellum
