memory Flashcards
What is coding?
The format in which information is stored in the different memory stores
What is capacity?
The amount of information that can be held in a memory store at a given time
What is duration?
The lengths of time information can be held in memory store
What is stm?
The limited capacity memory store
Coding is mainly acoustic
Capacity is between 5-9 items
Duration is between 18-30 secs
What is ltm?
The permanent memory store
Coding is mainly semantic
Unlimited capacity and duration
What was baddleys research?
Research coding in STM and LTM
. Word lists
. 4 sets
. Recall order of word lists
. Immediately and after 20 mins
Acoustically similar had worst recall
Semantically similar had worst recall
Words had become confused
LTM semantically coded
STM acoustically coded
What was Jacobs research?
. Research capacity of stm
. Digit span
. How many items
. Mean was 9.3 for digits
. Mean was 7.3 for letters
. Memory can hold 7-9 items
What was miller’s research?
Research capacity of stm
Sevens
Chunked items
Recall 5 words and 5 letters
Magical number 7
What was Peterson and petersons research?
Duration of stm
24 students 8 trials
3 digit number
Count from 3, 6, 9 ,12, 15 and 18 secs
Stm lasts 18 seconds
Very short duration
What was bahricks research?
Duration of ltm
School photos
90% accuracy photo recognition
60% accuracy free recall
48 years, 70% photo
30% free
Ltm last long time
What is the multi store model?
A representation of how memory works in terms of 3 stores called sensory register, stm and ltm. It describes how information is transferred from one store to another, how it is remembered and how it is forgotten
What is sensory register?
The memory store for 5 senses
Vision iconic visual
Hearing echoic acoustic
Huge and last a very short time- less than half a second
Who created the multi store model?
Atkinson and shiffrin 1968
